All the data/files on our computer live on something called a Hard Drive often abbreviated to “HDD” for Hard Disk Drive. In order for this physical component to store data in a usable form it needs to have an organised method of filing.
This is what we call a “File System” and there are many different kinds. However, they all share one thing in common and that is the fact that they are all very complicated. Imagine the most complicated filing cabinet you can think of and magnify that by about a thousand!
As this file system is constanly changing the position of existing files, creating new files and deleting old data it is inevetible that errors and inconsitencies creep in.
Using methods built into most Operating Systems like Windows and Mac OSX we can run a check which fixes common errors in this file system which are often the cause of problems.
